The Lonely, the other fears, they don't do good things. I can't do anything for him. But surely there's something that can protect other people from those dreams.
Yes. And Jon has to watch them. He doesn't.. I mean, I'm not part of the Beholding so I don't know all the details, but I've.. seen one of them. He's trapped, the Eye keeps him there forced to just-- just watch people relive their trauma over and over.
About the Eye? [ he hesitates. ] .. Honestly, I still don't know all that much about it. [ a sigh. ] The Lonely and the Eye are tentatively allies, but they don't really share that much. [ which is true. but also, as much as he genuinely likes nick, he's not.. completely sure he wouldn't use that information eventually. jon has a way of getting under people's skin. ] What did you want to know?
I need to know what he’s getting out of these dreams. Different demons - which, I guess, isn’t the most precise word but let’s not quibble right now - get different things out of tormenting mortals. Some of them just think it’s funny.
Some do it because it’s a way to free themselves. Some feed from it. Some...do it for revenge.
There are different things that all have different defenses.
[Martin, if you want him to help you need to tell him what’s happening.]
Oh, [ he breathes out, sounding almost relieved. ] That I do know. The Beholding feeds off them through Jon. Making them relive those experiences, knowing they're being watched, being seen, over and over again.
I know that you do, but I-- I still.. worry. The Beholding isn't exactly, um.. dangerous in the usual way of things, but I'm still going to fret about you.
I.. It's-- It's not really important, is it? [ he clears his throat. ] Anyway, it's um.. for the best it's that way. Given things back home. [ it would be hard to leave if there were going to be people that missed him. ]
You'll let me know, won't you? If you're able to work something out for Jon?
No, I expect he won't. And I-- I'm not saying.. that is, I'd like to know. If it can be done. If.. he has an option. If the Beholding can even be stopped from interacting with its Avatar that way.
If nothing else, he ought to know if he has a chance.
[ martin.. doesn't know. but then, that's why he'd gone to nick, after all. if anyone would have ideas here..
and maybe if there's a chance that the beholding won't.. fight it. because he's most worried about jon getting caught between the eye and nick's solution.
